The Spirit of Springfield was organized in December of 1989 by local business leaders following the demise of the city-supported Mayor’s Office of Community Affairs. With a mission "to promote community activities and encourage civic pride", the private non-profit organization has successfully entertained approximately 6.3 million people. Corporate contributions total almost $2 million, and in-kind contributions have amounted to more than $4 million.
