2002 "Star Spangled Springfield" Kicks Off With Rally at Tower Square
Springfield, Massachusetts - On Friday, June 1, 2002, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in front of Gus & Paul's at Tower Square, WGGB-TV NEWS40, the Spirit of Springfield, Tower Square, and ROCK102 will join Springfield Mayor Michael J. Albano and event sponsors for a "Star Spangled Springfield" kick-off rally. The rally will be broadcast live on WGGB-TV NEWS40, and will include the presentation of checks by "Star Spangled Springfield" sponsors.
ROCK102 will also conduct a fund raising effort for "Star Spangled Springfield" during the rally. The radio station will be auctioning off tickets to a Boston Red Sox/New York Yankees game at Fenway Park in Boston. The auction will begin Friday morning on the "Bax & O'Brien" ROCK 102 morning show, and continue through the kick-off rally. The highest bidder will be announced on ROCK102 and on WGGB-TV NEWS40.
Anyone who wishes to make a donation to "Star Spangled Springfield" but is unable to attend the rally may mail their contribution to "Fireworks," Spirit of Springfield, 101 State Street Suite 220, Springfield, MA 01103.
"Star Spangled Springfield" festivities will swing into high gear on July 4th at 7:30 p.m., with the "I Am An American" ceremony on the Springfield City Hall esplanade. After the patriotic ceremony, guests will enjoy a special concert by the United States Air Force Band of Liberty.
Following the concert at 9:30pm, the skies over the Memorial Bridge will be ignited with a spectacular fireworks display from Fireworks by Grucci. ROCK102 will provide a musical simulcast of the fireworks program.
